Miss Sixty Oversized Red Coat-Runway
Nanette Lepore 'Marrakesh' Coat (Available at Nordstrom.com)
How can you still look fabulous around town when you have to cover up every inch of skin? With the decreasing temperatures in the District leaving me shivering in my lacy stockings, I can no longer avoid winter's wrath. Parting with fall, my absolute favorite season, it feels a bit somber. I slowly retire many of my favorite pieces to the back of my closet. However, on the brighter side, Fashionistas, don't feel discouraged. I've noticed that some women tend to ignore the fact that winter can bring a whole new world of wardrobe possibilities!
The most important winter staple: a great coat. Invest in a coat that highlights your style, and don't be afraid to pay a pretty penny. A well-made wool Italian or French coat will last you for years. Remember, you will be wearing your winter coat with just about every outfit for the next four months, so choose one that is a statement to your personal style. Basic black, camel or houndstooth coats are simple yet timeless; choose one with flirty ruffles for an updated take on the classic look. For the more daring fashionista, go for a bold print or a bright color, like Miss Sixty's tulip shaped coat with oversized collar. For the trendsetter, choose a coat with details such as a fur trim, like the Nanette Lepore 'Marrakesh' Coat, or one that is military inspired. Always be sure to choose a flattering silhouette; it is easy to be swallowed up by a poorly fitted coat. A cinched waist or belt is flattering on any frame.
Juicy Couture Faux Fur Trapper Hat (Shopbop.com)
Diane von Furstenberg Serafina Gloves (BergdorfGoodman.com)
Another must-have winter staple : a trapper hat! Preferably one with fur (faux is fine). I am loving this leopard one by Juicy Couture. Don't forget a great pair of gloves. Leather happens to be a favorite of mine, especially when rocked out with studded details! These Serafina Gloves by DVF are perfect to keep your fingers warm and add some edge to an outfit.
The bottom line is to have fun with it. Don't let the low temperatures bring you down. Explore your options while keeping warm!
